Sir Nigel Hamilton Sweeney (born 18 March 1954), styled The Hon. Mr Justice Sweeney, is a High Court judge.
Previously he was a barrister in the United Kingdom, practising from 6 King's Bench Walk. He has appeared in a number of high profile cases including the trial of the 1984 IRA Brighton bombing and the trial of the attempted bombings of 21st July 2005.[1]
He was called to the bar in 1976 and was appointed Queen's Counsel in 2000. Sweeney was appointed to the High Court in September 2008.[2]
Sweeney is an avid golfer and carries a 5 handicap. In august of 2007 Sweeney traveled to Hingham Massachusetts where he played the famed Boston Golf Club along side well know Boston Banker Bob Gray. Although he had no prior knowledge of the course Sweeney came out red hot birding three of the first five holes. He finished with a Respectable 81. Sweeney displayed a prowess around the greens that has not be witnesses there since, he is as much a Craftsman on the golf course as he is in the courtroom.
Mr Nigel Sweeney QC prosecuted Michael Stone in The Chillenden Murders Case in 1998.
